How do we get the organic waste out to the dumpster/tote?

Each business or residence we deal with has their own special way of handling this question. Some like to have a small bucket that gets taken out regularly, others will want to put it in a bag and empty the bag into the bin. What will work best for you? Our team can help you figure out your system to make composting your food waste as easy as possible.

Will it smell?

No more than your regular garbage, and less if you keep adding shredded newspaper, wood stir sticks, coasters, sugar packets, napkins and other woody, carbon-based items. Our pick-ups are once a week or twice, if needed, so there isn’t enough time for much of a smell to develop. We recommend that you try to keep your tote in the shade if possible, it helps to keep the product cooler and also to keep the lids closed when not in use. This eliminates the flies that tend to invade and lay their eggs. We can also supply a lock for the bins so animals or people cannot get into them and make a mess or cause problems. Compostable Bags also help A LOT, and we strongly recommend you use them.

What about compostable plastics?

There is some confusion about this in the media, so we have some answers for you:

BPI Certified Compostable Plastics

One of the most important elements of making compost at our facility is heat. Because we carefully control this, we are able to accept compostable plastic products such as cups, cutlery, clamshells and compostable bags.

We have been working with our supplier to distribute a quality product that completely breaks down in our facility. The EcoSafe bags that we use in our totes and sell to our customers display the BPI logo, which is what we look for when determining if your product will properly break down in the composting process. Look for this when purchasing compostable material for your event or location.

Biodegradable is not compostable!

Where can I buy the EcoSafe bags?

You can currently purchase these bags through us or Farm Bound Home Delivery in Vernon. They sell them on their website, at their location on Middleton Mountain in Vernon, as well as at their new Farm Bound Zero Waste store in Kelowna!
