We had a booth set up with information on how you can get started with our service, who’s composting locally as well as simple tips to get your compost system working at home. Keli gave a short talk in one of the breakout rooms.

We’ll have a booth and give a short presentation on the connections between our food waste and the land that grows our food for the local and regional market and how it is ALL of our responsibility to reduce waste as much as possible in our own lives. This is an “Invitation Only” Event for local producers, processors, farmers and such.

We sponsored this event by taking all of the compostable material sourced by the DVA away from each of the contestants’ restaurant locations. Also, Keli got to be a chili judge! Congratulations to all restaurants for making delicious and diverse chilis.
“Salute to the Sockeye”
The annual Salmon Run event where they wanted to make sure not waste was created, thereby polluting the environment that the salmon (and we) live in. This month-long event has food trucks, fun activities and information booths.

5 years ago the IPE agreed to try composting as much food waste with us as possible.
We designed a system for them including small caddies with compostable bags for vendors, dedicated compost bins for the bathroom paper towel and a few totes rolled around by generous young volunteers from a local school and the Girl Guides.
The IPE staff were very excited to see the diverted amounts get bigger each year, from just 1,250 lbs the first year.
We have diverted a HUGE and growing amount of food from this annual event in the last 4 years and we broke a record in 2018 with almost 15,000 lbs of food waste diverted!
We thank all of the volunteers, staff and guests for helping us reduce waste at the IPE!
It’s THE agricultural event of the year in the North Okanagan, not to be missed.
